๐ Rules refresher: the three special moves
- Castling โ king moves two squares toward a rook, the rook jumps to the far side. Legal only if neither piece has moved, the squares between are empty, and the king does not pass through or land on an attacked square.
- En passant โ when an enemy pawn advances two squares and lands beside your pawn, you may capture it as if it had moved one square โ but only on the very next move.
- Promotion โ a pawn reaching the last rank becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight of your choice. Under-promotion to a knight wins real games; the engine supports all four choices.
Three opening principles that carry you to 1500
- Fight for the centre โ pawns and pieces pointed at e4/d4/e5/d5 control the board's arteries.
- Develop before you attack โ knights and bishops out, then castle. One premature queen raid loses more games than any tactic wins.
- Castle early โ an uncastled king in an opening file is the root cause of most sub-1200 losses.
From there, tactics decide games: pins (a piece cannot move without exposing something worse), forks (one piece attacks two), and skewers (a valuable piece is forced to move, exposing the one behind). The AI levels here are deliberately tuned so each step up punishes one more category of these mistakes.
โ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play chess against the computer for free?
Yes โ every AI level is free and runs directly in your browser with no download or sign-up. Levels range from beginner-friendly to an engine that will exploit weak squares and loose pawns without mercy.
Are the full FIDE rules implemented?
Yes. Castling with all its preconditions, en passant, pawn promotion with under-promotion, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule and stalemate are all enforced exactly as over-the-board FIDE rules specify.
Can I review my games afterwards?
Every game is recorded move by move and can be stepped through afterwards, with PGN support so you can export a game into any analysis tool you like.
Is there a rating system?
Rated PvP games update your Elo on the global VSS ladder in real time. Guest players get a provisional rating immediately; a free account keeps it across devices.
