Is It Cheaper to Buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max in Hong Kong Than in Malaysia? Price, Model, Warranty and Stock Compared
· By Xin Wang · 䏿–‡
Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max cheaper in Hong Kong than in Malaysia? At Apple's list prices on 4 October 2026 and that day's exchange rate, the 256GB model most people want is only about RM18 cheaper, which a card fee wipes out. And right now Apple The Exchange TRX has it in stock while Hong Kong does not.
Key findings
- Price: iPhone 18 Pro Max 256GB is HK$11,499 in Hong Kong, about RM5,981, against RM5,999 in Malaysia. A difference of RM18.
- The gap grows with storage: about RM82 at 512GB, RM262 at 1TB and RM557 at 2TB.
- Model: Apple's spec pages for both regions list nano-SIM plus eSIM. The Hong Kong model is not dual physical SIM, as some assume.
- Warranty: Apple's warranty terms say iPhone service may be restricted to the country or region of original sale.
- Stock: on the evening of 4 October, TRX had three colours each of Pro Max 256GB and 512GB. All six Hong Kong stores had none of those eight models.

Why this article
About nine in ten visitors to our Apple Store stock radar are in Malaysia, yet 240 to 290 users a day check stock at Hong Kong stores. Many people are clearly thinking about buying in Hong Kong or asking someone to bring one back. This article puts price, model, warranty and stock side by side, with sources you can check.
Price comparison: 256GB is almost identical
Prices are from the buy pages of Apple Malaysia and Apple Hong Kong on 4 October 2026. The exchange rate is that day's reference rate, HK$1 = RM0.5201.
iPhone 18 Pro Max
| Storage | Hong Kong | In ringgit | Malaysia | Hong Kong is cheaper by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | HK$11,499 | RM5,981 | RM5,999 | RM18 (0.3%) |
| 512GB | HK$13,299 | RM6,917 | RM6,999 | RM82 (1.2%) |
| 1TB | HK$16,799 | RM8,737 | RM8,999 | RM262 (2.9%) |
| 2TB | HK$21,999 | RM11,442 | RM11,999 | RM557 (4.6%) |
iPhone 18 Pro
| Storage | Hong Kong | In ringgit | Malaysia | Hong Kong is cheaper by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | HK$10,499 | RM5,461 | RM5,499 | RM38 (0.7%) |
| 512GB | HK$12,299 | RM6,397 | RM6,499 | RM102 (1.6%) |
| 1TB | HK$15,799 | RM8,217 | RM8,499 | RM282 (3.3%) |
| 2TB | HK$20,999 | RM10,922 | RM11,499 | RM577 (5.0%) |
The pattern is clear. The smaller the storage, the closer the two prices. The larger the storage, the more Hong Kong saves you. Most buyers want 256GB.
What is left after fees
The figures above use the reference rate, which you will not get in practice. Paying in Hong Kong with a Malaysian credit card usually adds a foreign transaction fee from the bank and the card network. Changing cash has a buy-sell spread. The exact cost depends on your card issuer.
As an estimate, if your real cost is 2% above the reference rate:
- Pro Max 256GB costs about RM6,101 in Hong Kong, about RM100 more than buying in Malaysia.
- Pro Max 512GB costs about RM7,055, about RM56 more.
- Pro Max 1TB costs about RM8,912, still about RM87 less.
- Pro Max 2TB costs about RM11,671, still about RM328 less.
That is before flights and a hotel. Flying to Hong Kong just to buy a phone does not pay. If you are going anyway, only 1TB and 2TB save real money.
Exchange rates move every day. For today's figures, use the iPhone price comparison, which converts at the current rate.
Hong Kong vs Malaysian model
- SIM: the iPhone 18 Pro spec pages of both Apple Malaysia and Apple Hong Kong list "Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)" with dual eSIM support. That is one physical SIM plus eSIM in both regions. Earlier Hong Kong iPhones had two physical SIM slots. Apple's spec page for this generation does not say so.
- Part number: Malaysian part numbers end in
X/Aand Hong Kong ones inZA/A. They are different regional versions. - Cellular bands: I have not checked band by band whether the two versions are identical. Before buying, look up your model on Apple's iPhone cellular page.
- Charger and accessories: box contents follow each region's Apple site.
Warranty
Apple's warranty terms for the Asia Pacific region include this sentence: "Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, HomePod, and Apple Vision Pro to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device."
So an iPhone bought in Hong Kong and taken back to Malaysia is not guaranteed local warranty service if something goes wrong. The full terms are on Apple's warranty page. What happens in practice is for Apple Malaysia to say.
A phone bought in Malaysia has no such question, and returns are simpler: under Apple Malaysia's policy a return must be requested within 14 days.
Where it is easier to buy
Many people looked to Hong Kong because Malaysia had no stock in late September. That has changed.
| Model | Malaysia (TRX) | Hong Kong (6 stores) |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB Black | Available | None at all 6 |
| 256GB Silver | Available | None at all 6 |
| 256GB Glacier Blue | Available | None at all 6 |
| 256GB Burgundy Wine | Unavailable | None at all 6 |
| 512GB Black | Available | None at all 6 |
| 512GB Silver | Available | None at all 6 |
| 512GB Glacier Blue | Available | None at all 6 |
| 512GB Burgundy Wine | Unavailable | None at all 6 |
- Malaysia: Apple The Exchange TRX received large batches on 2 and 3 October, and most models have stayed available since. See Apple The Exchange TRX restock times.
- Hong Kong: the six stores release stock between 7 and 9 AM every day, but Pro Max 256GB and 512GB are the most contested and are usually gone within half an hour. 256GB Black did not appear once in the first five days we recorded. See Hong Kong Apple Store restock times (in Chinese).
So the situation is the opposite of what many expect: Malaysia is now easier than Hong Kong. Stock changes all the time, so check the stock radar before you order.
What about iPhone Duo
iPhone Duo opens for pre-order at 8 PM on 16 October in both regions and goes on sale on 23 October. It costs more, and the gap between the two regions is larger:
| Storage | Hong Kong | In ringgit | Malaysia | Hong Kong is cheaper by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | HK$17,499 | RM9,101 | RM9,499 | RM398 (4.2%) |
| 512GB | HK$19,299 | RM10,037 | RM10,499 | RM462 (4.4%) |
| 1TB | HK$22,799 | RM11,858 | RM12,499 | RM641 (5.1%) |
| 2TB | HK$27,999 | RM14,562 | RM15,499 | RM937 (6.0%) |
After about 2% in exchange costs, the 256GB still saves a little over RM200. But Duo is a brand-new foldable, and the risk of warranty service being limited to the place of sale weighs more than it does for an ordinary iPhone. We will keep recording stock in both regions after launch.
When buying in Hong Kong makes sense
- Not worth it: a trip made to buy a 256GB or 512GB iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max. The price is nearly the same, the warranty is less certain, and Hong Kong is currently harder to buy from than Malaysia.
- Worth considering: you are going to Hong Kong anyway and want 1TB or 2TB, or an iPhone Duo. The saving is a few hundred ringgit, and you accept that warranty service may have to happen in Hong Kong.
- Asking someone to bring one: the price is the same as going yourself. Add the other person's time and the difficulty of a return or exchange if something is wrong.
For the rules on declaring goods when you enter Malaysia, follow the Royal Malaysian Customs Department. This article does not advise on that.

Will the conclusion change if the exchange rate moves?
Somewhat, but not much. The 256GB gap is only 0.3%, so the ringgit would have to rise a good deal against the Hong Kong dollar to open a real difference. For today's conversion see the iPhone price comparison.
